This is the site you want if you want to get the chance to see the White Breasted Kingfisher . It has been reported at other sites, but generally it has not been seen often at all and was thought to have vacated this area. I personally had not seen it at all despite visiting this area (Dalyan) three times yearly since 1996. However, Paul Hope in his book ' Walking and Birdwatching in South West Turkey’ reports a similar pattern himself until a pair were spotted in 2004. I am pleased to say we saw a single bird on three occasions (same bird on same day) in October 2009. (Heard but not seen September 2010) Needless to say it was on the Namnam River which flows into lake Köycegiz from near Hamitköy . This river is far away from the main tourist drag and probably is why it is still there. Access to the River is not possible from the lake as the mouth is all silted up with mud. We did try in 2007 only to spend an hour and half in the water with the boat captain trying to rock the boat off the mud flat.

To get to the Namnam river from Dalyan head towards Köycegiz by car or moped. Once in Köycegiz make you way to the promenade.

With the lake to your left  continue along the road and head for the village of Hamitköy passing Hotel Kaunos also on your left lets you know you are on the right road.

After passing through Hamitköy turn left signposted Sultaniye, Ekincik and Candir .

Soon you will reach a bridge which crosses the Namnam River . Before the bridge, where you first see the river, a small track leads down to the river side. Find a suitable place to park up and make your way to the river bank.

You should be able to follow tracks along the bank and settling down to find a spot, should be good birdwatching and you never know what might decide to perch near you! As can be seen from the photos below the Namnam River, despite being a feeder to the lake is unlike all the other reed banked tributaries and provides more cover for this scarce kingfisher.
