As long as but noticeably bulkier than Great Tit. Medium-sized to large, bulky tit, with strong bill, broad head, and rather dull plumage similar in pattern to northern race of Willow Tit, though black bib larger and white cheeks less deep.
Unmistakable, being much larger than Marsh Tit and Willow Tit and having much bolder behaviour and distinctive voice; not as acrobatic as smaller tits, visibly using power rather than agility in some feeding actions and able to tear seed-heads apart like finch. Less restless than small tits, content to stay in discrete area until food source exhausted.
